As enemy tanks grew heavier and better protected, commanders demanded even more powerful designs in response. For the British this led first to the Conqueror and then to the even heavier FV215.

The FV215 adapted the Conqueror’s heavily armoured chassis and mounted a massive 183 mm gun in a large, boxy turret. It fired a High-Explosive Squash Head (HESH) shell weighing 72.5 kg (160 lbs).

On detonation, the HESH round creates a shockwave that causes the target’s armour to spall, sending fragments through the interior. Unlike traditional kinetic rounds, HESH does not lose effectiveness at longer ranges.

The shell size and separate propellant cases made loading the 183 mm gun difficult even in ideal conditions, requiring two loaders to maintain a rate of fire of one round every 25–30 seconds.
